Most people have seen the gorgeous pictures of "The Wave" in northern Arizona/Southern Utah. As you need to have a permit to hike in this area (Coyote Buttes North), it's best to try to participate in the permit lottery system way in advance. For example, at the start of October I threw in my hat for the lottery to get a permit four months later, in February 2019. While chances are slim that I will win a permit, I am still sorta kina holding my breath! I will know around 1 November. To participate in the lottery, you have to pay a $5 non-refundable fee and there are specific timelines to follow. You can only participate in the online lottery 4 months in avance of when you actually want to go. You can also go in person and participate in an on-site lottery, but if you win a permit, it's for the NEXT day. This may be something you can do if you are in the area for a longer period of time, but nothing is ever guaranteed. I will keep trying the lottery even if it's a NO GO in February...
