Enroll in what? The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program!
The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service that allows U.S. citizens and nationals traveling and living abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
- Receive important information from the Embassy about safety conditions in your destination country, helping you make informed decisions about your travel plans.
- Helps the U.S. Embassy contact you in an emergency, whether natural disaster, civil unrest, or family emergency.
- Helps family and friends get in touch with you if you were to be in an emergency.
If you are traveling together with your family, one person can enroll the trip on STEP and then list the other family members in the "accompanying travelers" section. You could also do this if your are traveling with a group of friends, but it's better for each individual to enroll the trip so everyone can give their appropriate emergency contact details.
And remember to always purchase travel insurance!
