We all know that Scottsdale, Arizona is well known for its beautiful spa resorts. However, for the wellness-minded traveler who is looking for a relaxing destination that is a bit more off the beaten path, there is CIVANA! The recently renovated resort is located in the town of Carefree (what's in a name?) and the high Sonoran Desert. While the spa facility is not yet open (set to open in December 2018), the facility has a large pool area, a well-equipped fitness facility, movement spaces (I even saw arial yoga stations), and weekly classes to expand mind, body and spirit. Overall the location has a modern Scandinavian-Frank Lloyd Wright feel to it and its attention to eco-friendly touches can only be admired. For example, all the guest rooms (which all have a balcony or patio) have bedding that is free of chemicals and the bathrooms have eco-friendly toiletries. The patio near the pool area has chairs made of recycled materials and the on-site restaurant named Terras serves non GMO, no-preservative food for the foodies among us who care what we put in our bodies.
Corporations will also find a home in CIVANA as the resort has plenty of meeting space for events, conferences, or workshops. The resort will encourage companies to add a touch of wellness into their event program. For example: organize a real estate sales workshop which has a breakout session on meditation or preparing healthy smoothies.
If you want some real western-style entertainment in addition to your wellness getaway, the town of Cave Creek is only a short drive away! If you have never seen bull riding live, then make sure to check out the Buffalo Chip saloon on a Wednesday or Friday night. I would recommend getting there early (bull riding starts at 8pm) as locals and visitors will come out in droves. Definitely an experience that is not to be missed.
